This award winning artist’s work is largely inspired by surface designed fabric and the beauty of nature. She incorporates a wide variety of textiles, found objects, wire, paper, feathers, mica as well as metals, foil and paper. The artist’s intention is to evoke a mood or elicit a memory to connect with the viewer. The artwork pushes the image to the abstract by transparent layering and intuitive composition. Celebrating imperfection, Sue uses both machine and hand stitching on hand dyed, painted or eco-dyed fabric to honor the Wabi Sabi aesthetic.
“As Forgiveness Ebbs and Flows” and “Cadence of Leaves” will be exhibited at the new gallery space at Red Rocks Community College, located at 13300 W 6th Ave. Lakewood, CO. The exhibit runs August 9-October 4. Opening Reception will be held August 22, 4-6:00 pm.
Delivered my 2 art quilts to the Depot Art Gallery in Littleton this morning (7-21-24). I grew up in Littleton and remember our family went to that train station and took a trip to Colorado Springs. When we were ready to return to Littleton, we found out the depot for the return trip was across town. We had to take a taxi to catch the train to Littleton! We made it there just in time. The exhibit is presented by Fiber Art Colorado. It opens July 23rd and runs till September 7th. Hours are 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Closed on Mondays. Mark your calendars to see this eclectic exhibit!
Been working on some small paper and mixed media collages. These are either on a small stretched canvas or in a shadow box type frame, or unframed wall art. Most measure less than 154 square inches. Having some fun with molding paste and feathers! Still have a few hope spirit dolls. “Hope is the thing with feathers” – Emily Dickinson
Well, these are almost completed. I still have to hand sew the facing and hanging sleeve on the back of these. The one on the left, “Trees in the Sky with Roots”, measures 27″ W x 20″ L and the detail in the middle shows the machine quilting. The image on the right, “Dark Shadows”, measures 27″ W x 18″ L. The middle section is hand painting on fabric with an organza overlay and hand stitching. Somehow I did not get a detail image of this one! (Hmmm, maybe next time.)
Below are completed works for the Holiday Art Market at the Arvada Center this year. Most are collages using fabric, paper, silk screens and gelli prints. These are framed, on stretched canvas or matted.
I have been assembling paper and fabric collages for wall hanging. Here are recent efforts. The larger collage on the left is “Canvas on Silk” on stretched canvas. The top right is going to be a stitched wall hanging and the bottom image is a stitched wall hanging.
Took a wonderful workshop with Valerie White this last weekend. So many fun techniques from flour paste resist, to deconstruction and stenciling with stabilizer and acrylic paint.
Below see a quick collage of images showing a variety of collages, textures, weathered paper and an inside view of a momigami vase with indigo papers and some stitching I have done recently.
This is a very soft coiled bowl made with cotton and linen thread. I have embellished this with little ties in lavender.
Also below are my submissions to “Exploring Darkness” for R Gallery in Boulder. These are all mixed media pieces ranging in size from 6″ x 8″ up to 12″ x 12″.
This wall quilt measures 27″ W x 19″ L and includes hand painted fabric, stamps, dryer sheets and organza overlays. I have hand stitched throughout and then machine quilted the final details. There is some commercial fabric I unearthed in my stash from several years ago. It is seen here as the black and white strips with an Asian flair toward the top and bottom of the quilt.
Momigami Vessel
Below is a vessel created with wrapping paper that is crumbled and then painted, plus some indigo dyed paper and hand stitches. The image to the right of the vessel is the interior of the vase. This was formed into a cylinder and a coiled base hand sewn to the bottom made with paper yarn. It is about 12 inches tall and about 5″ deep.
